Jim Cooper Announces Bid for Thurston County Commission

OLYMPIA, WA -- Jim Cooper, current member of the Olympia City Council and director of United Ways of the Pacific Northwest, has announced his candidacy for Thurston County Commissioner, District One. An Army veteran, Eagle Scout and fourth generation public servant, Jim is excited to extend his efforts countywide.

Service is a central tenet of Jim’s campaign; Thurston County residents volunteer at an extraordinarily high rate and Jim Cooper is someone who knows just how much service matters. “I was raised to value service as a core component of good citizenship. We all must do our part in order for our community to succeed and public service is one way I do my part.” says Cooper. “I am passionate about protecting people and our environment, and the Thurston County Commission seat will allow me to continue to advocate for these priorities.”

If elected, Jim will work to:

  • Increase opportunity for all Thurston County families
  • Ensure we have healthy people and healthy places throughout the county
  • Make county government work for you

Elected to the Olympia City Council in 2011, Jim is also the CEO of United Ways of the Pacific Northwest, the trade association for local United Way organizations in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Jim is an active supporter of several local nonprofit organizations including SafePlace, Boys and Girls Clubs of Thurston County, Friendly Water for the World, and the Olympia Education Foundation.

Bringing a wide breadth of regional experience and relationships, Jim is currently chair of the Olympia City Finance Committee, chair of the Olympic Regional Clean Air Agency Board, chair of the City's Law Enforcement and Firefighters (LEOFF1) Disability Board, on the Thurston County EMS Council, and a member of the Olympia Rotary Club. Jim also serves as vice president of the Board of Director’s for the Olympia Gear Exchange, an Olympia-based small business. In his free time, Jim loves playing outside with his wife and young daughter.

Jim is proud to have the early endorsements of State Representatives Sam Hunt and Chris Reykdal, Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock, Thurston County Treasurer Shawn Myers, Port of Olympia Commissioner Bill McGregor, Thurston PUD Commissioner Russ Olsen, Lacey Mayor Andy Ryder, Lacey Councilmembers Jeff Gadman and Cynthia Pratt, Olympia Mayor-Elect Cheryl Selby, Olympia Councilmember-Elect Jessica Bateman, Tumwater Councilmembers Nicole Hill, Tom Oliva and Joan Cathey, Tenino Mayor-Elect Wayne Fournier, UFCW Local 367, Olympia Fire Fighters Local 468, Lacey Fire Fighters Local 2903 and Tumwater Fire Fighters Local 2409.
